«Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep»: A Body Horror that goes beyond nigthmares.

It is easy to get lost in your thoughts, but what happens when you get lost in the mind of someone capable of destroying the world?

Ambrose London, a renowned expert in the field study of dreams, is called by a fellow doctor in the Arkham Asylum to interview James Fhelleps, a patient with apparently a case of split personality disorder. Since his first encounter with him, London starts to have nightmares and hallucinations. This turns out to be merely the beginning of his problems, as Joe Slater, the second personality of the patient, not only starts to feel as a real evil person, but also as something that has the goal to end humanity as we know it, and the means to do it.

Ok, there are some good things that writer and director Chad Ferrin brings with his new film “Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep”, based on the short story written by H.P. Lovecraft of (almost) the same name…

However, before I dwell into details, I need to give you a warning:

Do not watch this film during family time in your living room!

This goes double especially if you have people in your household that might be minors or that are sensitive to nudity, gore, mutilations and (somewhat – I’m not judging) gratuitous sex scenes, and who might walk into the room at the worst possible moment.

With that out the way, allow me to elaborate.

Movie Theater Massacre : A love letter to the celluloid shrine

Ever wondered how it would be to make a movie in the vein of “Clerks meet Scream”? And set in a movie theater instead of a small convenience store?

Well, wonder no more! “Movie Theater Massacre” has you covered!

From the official synopsis:

A group of employees are working their last week at a movie theater that is going out of business when a mysterious figure begins to murder people.”

Ok, that premise should put people in the seats, right?

Well, while there is a lot of stuff that I enjoyed from “Movie Theater Massacre”, I need to warn you that this is not a movie for everyone. If you are looking for blood and gore or tons of laughs, this might not be for you.

However, if you love cinema, and you are bummed down of how the movie theaters are struggling to keep afloat after the pandemic and how empty they are today, no matter what movie is playing, this love letter to the celluloid shrine might be a good way to kill 70 minutes or so.

So let me be start with the positives:

«The Damned» : A very good film to start your 2025. In the theaters on January 3rd.

Facing one of the coldest winters in history, and with the lowest fishing catches in several years, Eva, a widowed owner of a small fishing station in the Icelandic region, along with the crew of her fishing boat, witnesses how a foreign ship hits the reefs in the open sea and starts sinking.

Having to choose between saving the crew of the shipwreck and risking the safety of her own people, especially when their supplies are extremely low, Eva makes the difficult decision of forcing her and her crew to remain on land, able to only witness the tragedy.

Forced by the lack of fish and supplies, Eva and her crew sail into the sea to salvage whatever they can from the shipwreck the next morning. This ends up taking the life of Ragna, the fishermen’s captain, and also the life of a survivor that managed to stay alive in one of the reefs. Seeing that their lives are in danger, the fishermen go back to the shore, leaving the rest of the survivors of the shipwreck to their own devices in the reef.

The next day, the bodies of the sailors from the shipwreck appear on the shore, and the fishermen give them a burial. However, they all ignore the warning of Helga, an elderly woman that assists Eva in the fishing station. The lady warns them explaining that due the way those sailors died, they will come back to life now as Draugr: a type of ghoul with supernatural powers that will seek revenge, and won’t stop until all of the people in the station are dead.

«The Count Of Monte Cristo»: Get your revenge or keep your soul.

Just when it seemed that the fortune was smiling to the young sailor Edmond Dantés, he finds himself arrested on his wedding day for a crime he did not commit, and imprisoned without trial in the feared prison known as Château d’If. When all hope seems to be lost, Edmond meets a wise fellow prisoner that gives him the tools to escape the prison and eventually, to take his revenge against those who falsely accused him and destroyed his life.

Under his new identity as “The Count Of Monte Cristo” and wearing many faces, Edmond sets in motion several plots to ensure the destruction of his enemies, but this will also come with a heavy price and unintended consequences, where Edmond could end up losing what little remains of the gentle, loving man he once was.

Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo” is one of my favorite novels (although I admit I only read it once more that twenty years ago) and I have seen several versions on film, mini series and comics. Each one of them has brought a new take on the story and I love most of them. I was excited to see this new version and it exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed every minute of it. The runtime goes a little bit more than three hours and I did not feel it because I was very engaged through the whole movie.

«Itch!» A new zombie film to scratch.

Jay, a widowed husband and his little daughter, who he hasn’t been able to connect with since her mother’s death, are forced to seek refuge in their small convenience store when a strange disease starts spreading in the city. This new infection causes the people to suffer from an extreme itch that causes them to hurt themselves and whoever is near them, losing their mind in the process.

At first, the store seemed like the best place to barricade themselves and wait for the chaos to blow over, since the emergency services are declared non-operative until further notice, and a martial law is imposed, where any person in the streets showing signs of the disease will be shot on sight. However, Jay and his daughter will soon discover that among the other people locked in the store with them is the menace that anyone can succumb to the new infection and become a lethal problem.

This is the premise of “ITCH!” the new film directed and written by Bari Kang (Lucky, Scrapper), an apocalyptic drama that recently premiered in the “Dances with Films NY” festival in New York.

While the premise can sound like a new version of similar films like “The Mist” or an episode of “The Walking Dead”, Kang does a great job delivering a familiar story with his own twist and merits, with interesting characters, with few but very effective special effects, an a great use of its run time, with a solid steady pace that increase the tension little by little.

Without doubt, this film can be an inspiration for all future filmmakers. I don’t think Kang had a lot of budget in his hands for this movie, but I also have no doubts that he used all his resources as far as he could, and the result can be felt. You can see a lot of heart was in this project where Bari Kang not only directed, but also wrote the script and played the lead character.

«Replicator»: When revenge takes more than a pound of flesh.

A small-town public defender Darby Vincent struggles every day trying her hardest to bring justice to the people that need it, but sadly her community seems to be short on morality and ethics. To make matters worse, she accepted to take in her home Ron, her absent and morally challenged father, since he has been diagnosed with cancer, and with very few months left to live. The duo have arguments right from the start, leaving the both of them to go out to drink their worries away.

The next morning, however, Ron seems to have decided to turn to a new page and change his ways, doing a complete 180 degree in his personality, much to the surprise (and concern) of Darby. Unfortunately this new beginning does not last, as Ron dies a few hours later from an apparently very bizarre shaving accident, and when the autopsy takes place, an even bigger mystery is discovered.

This is when Darby starts noticing very drastic changes in more people in her town, making her wonder what could be the connection between these events, and who (or what) is behind them.

This is the plot for “Replicator”; an interesting horror film directed by Mark Andrew Hamer and co-written with Russ Lindway. The film will be available in V.O.D. on December 10th. and also in select theaters in the United States.

While I enjoyed “Replicator”, it also ended up being one of those times where the film leaves me with mixed feelings once the credits start rolling. It is not necessarily a bad thing, it just leaves me wanting to root for the movie and promote it, but at the same time, I cannot say the movie was that great nor recommend it to everybody.

Allow me to elaborate.

«Okie» – When written words hurt more than stick and stones.

As a writer, you are supposed to write about what you know, and while it’s more than expected to use your own life experiences as part of your stories, some people might cross that invisible line between using your past as inspiration, and downright exploiting it at expense of those who you grew up with.

And if you happen to cross that line, don’t complain when the past comes back to bite you.

This is part of the lesson we see in “Okie”, the debut film by Kate Cobb, written by Kevin Bigley and that gets released on VOD this Friday, November 8th.

In this film we meet Louie Mulgrin, a successful writer that to his dismay needs to go back to the small decaying town he escaped from years ago, after his father passed away. This reluctance to stay in his former hometown more than he strictly needs is not so much because he has a deadline to meet with for a new novel, but because he knows that some ghosts from his past (both metaphorical and real) are bound to appear with unknown intentions.

From Screamfest 2024: «Carved»

The people of Cedar Creek, a small community in Maine who are trying to move on after an ecological disaster that occurred a few years ago, are celebrating a Halloween festival. But as soon as they start a pumpkin carving contest, they discover that they have to deal with a very violent (and very resourceful) mutant pumpkin that came to life and is seeking revenge against the humans that have destroyed several of its kind.

This is the premise for “Carved”, a film directed by Justin Harding that we had a chance to see at Screamfest 2024, and will be available to stream on Hulu on October 21.

Set in 1993, this horror-comedy opens with a very strong scene, and quickly lets us know that this is not a family film. There is gore, and a lot of blood, and after a few minutes we get thrown back a few hours earlier in the day, so we get a better idea of how this massacre got to take place.

The movie has very nice characters, and the acting was good. Of course there are characters that I enjoyed more than others, and sadly some do not stay for long on the screen.

«Smile 2» : When sequels actually are better than the original.

The sanity of pop star Skye Riley seems to slip through her fingers after witnessing the suicide of an acquaintance.

Ever since that horrible event, Skye starts to see several persons showing a scary wicked smile approaching her with dark intentions only to disappear, making her question her ability to distinguish what is real and what is not. Unbeknownst to her, she has become the new target of a supernatural entity that will torment her until she loses her mind and perishes.

Writer/director of “Smile 2” brings the next chapter in this universe that started with the short film “Laura Hasn’t Slept” and evolved to the full feature “Smile” back in 2022.

After the events at the conclusion of the first film, we see Joel, a policeman now infected with the curse of the Smile Entity, breaking into the house of some drug dealers with intentions of dying and passing the curse to them. However, some unforeseen details spoils the plan, and someone else ends up with the curse.

Some time later and due some very interesting circumstances, pop star Skye Riley ends up meeting with Lewis, a friend that can get her the pain medication that she is unable to get, and who turns out is the one that inherited Joel’s curse. This will be the beginning of Skye’s descent to hell.
