Tank-432-Movie-PosterToday our coverage for the Fantasia Film Festival 2016 will take us to the military thriller territories with the movie “Tank 432” (Also know as “Belly Of The Bulldog). In this film we meet a band of mercenary soldiers whose mission has taken an unexpected turn and find themselves running for their lives, finding as their only chance for refuge an old abandoned Bulldog tank.

Before anybody could think their options twice, since they are under fire and risking lto loose the two prisoners that need to be taken alive as part of the mission, the group choose to barricade themselves inside the tank, accidentally damaging the lock on the door in the process.

Finding themselves unable to get out, and with a mysterious enemy constantly attacking them, the squad decide to use the old tank to escape, although that could prove to be easier said than done. As more details from the mission comes to the light, the tension between the members start to rise, hinting that there might also be a threat among them even more serious that the enemy waiting outside.

“Tank 432” is an interesting film, but also is a slow burn, and that might turn some people off, although with a run time barely hitting the 90 minute mark and not relying only on claustrophobia elements, the film manages to create a tense atmosphere and still keep you entertained. While I feel some characters were not fully developed, they didn’t feel cartoonish or unidimensional, nor they end up being tiring, although the story might be predictable for some people, since is very simple and straight forward. Having said that, I felt the acting was good, and managed to keep my attention all the way till the end, keeping me guessing about who might still be alive when the credits roll, and wondering if the answers to what the mission’s true objectives were will be worth the wait.

The director knew how to keep the film with a steady pace and without using any pointless back stories that went nowhere just for padding. I also appreciate that he didn’t relied on cheap jump scares, although there are some scenes that might give too many hints as to where the story is going, thus why I feel might be a little bit too predictable for some people. I will point out that the movie never becomes boring or unbearable, and it is admirable, since most of the story is set in a single closed location.

The film was written and directed by Nick Giliespe (The Shadow Seamstress) and has Rupert Evans (Hellboy, The Boy, The Man In The High Castle), Steve Garry, Deidre Mullins and Michael Smiley (The World’s End, the Kill List) in the cast.

“Tank 432” (A.K.A. “Belly Of The Bullldog”) is currently doing its festivals runs, if you like slow burners like “Session 9”, be sure to see it if you get the chance.
